Haunting Julia: Timeline

The Timeline offers a chronological view of significant events in the history of the play Haunting Julia; it only lists major productions and does not include the vast majority of the many professional and amateur productions of the play.

November 1993
The Conservative Government announces a £5m cut in arts funding for 1994 - 1995. This results in stand-still funding for the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, Scarborough, for 1994.

January 1994
Alan Ayckbourn begins writing Haunting Julia, nine months earlier than he had originally intended due to the financial situation at the theatre and the need for a low budget production. This also results in a play which was always intended for end-stage production to be reconsidered for the round.

2 February 1994
World premiere of Alan Ayckbourn's Communicating Doors at the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, Scarborough, directed by Alan Ayckbourn.

20 April 1994
World premiere of Haunting Julia at the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, Scarborough, directed by Alan Ayckbourn.

17 May 1994
The BBC enquiries about adapting Haunting Julia as a radio play; this never comes to fruition.

Spring - Winter 1994
Alan Ayckbourn's original plan was to premiere Haunting Julia in the new Stephen Joseph Theatre in 1994 (there is no definitive date for when the play would have been performed) in the venue's end-stage auditorium. The opening of the theatre is delayed until 1996.

20 September 1994
Haunting Julia is nominated for Best Play in the TMA Regional Theatre Awards.

1995
Plans to transfer Haunting Julia to the West End unfortunately fall through.

4 February 1999
Revival of Haunting Julia at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, directed by Alan Ayckbourn. The production is end-stage as originally intended and the press night takes place on 10 February.

16 February - 5 June
The SJT revival of Haunting Julia, directed by Alan Ayckbourn, embarks on a UK tour starting at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham, and concluding at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds, before returning for as three-week run at the SJT.

Late 1999
Plans to transfer Haunting Julia to the West End unfortunately fall through.

17 March 2005
Haunting Julia published by Faber in Alan Ayckbourn: Plays 3.

2005
Plans for a major UK tour of Haunting Julia unfortunately fall through.

27 May 2008
Revival of Haunting Julia at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, directed by Richard Derrington. The production is in-the-round and sees Ian Hogg and Adrian McLoughlin reprise their roles from the world premiere 1994 production.

14 October 2010
Revival of Haunting Julia at the Lichfield Garrick, directed by Andrew Hall.

27 May 2011
The Lichfield Garrick's 2010 production of Haunting Julia is revived and transfers to the Riverside Studios, London, directed by Andrew Hall. Sixteen years after its initial planned London premiere, Haunting Julia finally opens in London.

29 August 2012
Haunting Julia UK tour, directed by Andrew Hall, opens at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester.

26 October 2012
North American premiere of Haunting Julia at The Little Theatre Of Norfolk, Norfolk, VA.

June 2013
Haunting Julia is made available for performance by amateur companies.

18 October 2018
Samuel French publishes the acting edition of Haunting Julia.

1 November 2018
Haunting Julia revived at the Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch, directed by Lucy Pitman-Wallace.

1 December 2020 - 31 January 2021
Haunting Julia, directed by and starring Alan Ayckbourn, is streamed as an audio play by the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
